ON AN ASSITED ASCENT LIKE YOU SEE ON EVEREST POOR SLEEPING BAG CHOICES ARE NOT A BIG PROBLEM, BUT FOR ALPINE ROUTES WHERE YOUR SKILL AT SHELTERING YOURSELF IS WHAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS BASED ON, AN OPTIMAL SLEEPING BAG IS A PRIMARY MATTER. THE PROBLEM IS, BAD SLEEPING CHOICES USUALLY MEANS ADDING BULK TO THE CLIMBERS LOAD AND CREATING ‘HOUSE KEEPING’ PROBLEMS IN THE HIGH CAMPS – BOTH THINGS THAT ARE PRIMARY FACTORS FOR TURNING AROUND. WE SEE A LOT OF SLEEPING BAGS OVER THE COURSE OF OUR TRIPS, WITH ONLY ABOUT 50% BEING ON THE MONEY, THE REST ARE A MISH MASH OF ILL-INFORMED CHOICES, MISUNDERSTANDINGS & MOST COMMONLY – FEAR MANY CLIMBERS ARE UNDERSTANDABLY PARANOID ABOUT BEING CAUGHT OUT HIGH & COLD WITH SOMETHING TOO COLD FOR THE JOB. Perfect for Mt Blanc in the summer.FOR BIG ALPINE ROUTES A SLEEPING BAG NEEDS TO BE WARM, DURABLE, LIGHT AND FIT FOR THE JOB. Hard Shell could go over/under if you needed.

There are simply too many variables to give an accurate figure.įrom experience, I think with a good base layer, fleece, and synthetic insulation layer & Electron Pro you'd be fine in -20✬. After all, it only has 40g less down in it than the Neutrino Pro! However, we do not have temperature ratings for jackets. You will still be able to use the Electron Pro Jacket at altitude. Designed to be worn over all your other layers, mostly when resting. I agree with you that the Neutrino Pro will be too much for most uses. Still the same top-class all-mountain jacket. Aside from that, there are no big differences.

The cuff design has also been tweaked slightly.

We now use recycled fabrics throughout and have added a two-way main zip to make it easier to use with a harness. This has been recently updated from the Electron Jacket. My short answer is: go for the Electron Pro jacket. See below for excerpts from their response, in case this is helpful to other people with the same question: I also wrote directly to Rab, asking which if the 2 jackets they would recommend. So at -4C static the jacket runs cold? That's not as warm as I hoped for!! Thanks for the response that is very helpful. What are the upgrades of the Electron Pro vs previous version? (I notice they added a double zip system which is good for belaying) if next year I plan to do a trip at 4000m or higher with temps of -20 will the Electron still be enough?)Īnyone own the Electron Pro and have any insights on temp rating comparison? Also it's not clear how much of a warmth downgrade it is vs the Neutrino pro (e.g. An additional consideration is being able to slip on a waterproof layer on top (not sure how easy it would be the neutrino pro).Īll in all, I'm leaning towards the Electron Pro, but I'm a bit unsure as I have not found a single review of this jacket (it seems to have been recently upgraded from the previous Electron jacket). Having said this I'm thinking the Nutrino Pro would be overkill for the main use I'd be giving it (primarily in Spain, especially with the covid situation now). I live in Madrid, Spain so the nearest mountain we have is up to 2,400m high so we are not talking severe Alpine conditions. These seem to be quite similar jackets, except Neutrino is warmer (230g vs 190g of fill) and slightly heavier 610g vs 520g). I'm split between getting a Rab Electron Pro vs a Rab Neutrino Pro. So I decided to invest in a down jacket.Īfter some research, I'm strongly leaning towards Rab. but static it can get cold pretty quickly. My main piece of gear at the moment is an Atom LT hoody which (if moving) is great down to about 0º. I'm planning to make the transition from rock climbing to ice and alpinism this winter and am looking for a solid and versatile technical jacket to keep me warm.
